Italian is a Romance language (descended from Latin, the language of ancient Rome), spoken by approximately 63 million people. Modern Italian, adopted by the Italian state after the unification of Italy (Risorgimento) in 1871, is based upon the Tuscan dialect.

The British Broadcasting System or BBC provides an Italian language course with a variety of resources for beginner and intermediate students. T here are video and audio clips, games and quizzes, and full transcripts (in Italian and English) of the Italian travel documentary “Italy Inside Out”.
Dentro l'Italianois a multimedia course in Italian with audio clips, grammatical exercises, and a course guide in a number of European languages.
